Wine Tourism

Macedonian excellent dry wine If it is true that "In vino veritas" (Latin saying: "the truth is in the wine"), Go Macedonia will help you discover the truth of a magnificent people and their skills in making the best wines widely known for their flavour and quality.

In the past, when people lived in villages, there was almost no family without a winery. Artisans who came from the richest families were the owners of the vastest vineyards and fullest barrels.

Macedonian traditional way of making wine Today, the wine makers sing when they pick the grapes and invite friends to taste their wines.

Making quality wine is an art, wine makers say. The recepy of 50 million year old winemaking hasn't changed much since the times of ancient wine makers.

Come with us to taste and to reveal the secret of the Macedonian robust wines: while enjoying a top quality dry wine with the exclusive Ohrid trout at the Lake side or when enjoying red wine with grilled chestnuts in Lazaropole on a winter day.

With Go Macedonia you can sing together with local winemakers to glorify Sveti Trifun (St. Triphun) and ask for a blessing for good yeilds.

The best vineyards are in the area of Demir Kapija, where people most often go to prune the vines on February 14th, the Day of Sveti Trifun, the protector of vine growers and vineyards. Famous for his healing power against different diseases and power to exorcise evil spirits from people, according to legends, St. Triphun healed a Roman emperor's daughter who suffered from a mental illness. During the times of prosecution of Christians under Tsar Decey, St. Trifun, although a very young man, came to the end of his life as a martyr on February 14th, 248. He was only 21. On this day, water that has been consecrated during services is taken from churches and used to sprinkle the vines while performing the act of vine pruning.
