The Carnival in Strumica
"I came to a town on one curious evening and became part of an all-encompassing celebration.
People wearing strange masks and costumes were tiptoeing from house to house in an atmosphere
of laughter, shouting and singing." - said the famous traveler, Evlija Chelebija, who published
the journals from his travels. When passing through this part of the world in 1670, he
stopped in Strumica at the time of the festival, when joy, happiness and delight prevail
all over town. Forget your worries and everyday problems and come join this colourful
celebration for one night. Feel the positive energy around you and remember to bring your
camera. Become part of the longest and most unforgettable night…

the 1960's. The enthusiastic people of Strumica saved this festivity from oblivion and
ever since then, the number of people who participate in it and of those who visit the
festival has been constantly increasing. Its place under the sun was confirmed when it
became part of the European Association of Carnivals in 1995.
