City of Skopje, the Capital

A one-day tour
Or, Customize your Skopje Tour!

City of Skopje Skopje, the capital of Macedonia and its largest city, is the right place to start discovering Macedonia. It has about 600.000 inhabitants and a history of more than 2.000 years. It is a place where many roads and cultures have met. Skupi was an important place in the times of the Roman and Byzantine Empires and some of the ruins from after the earthquake in 518 can still be seen. It was afterwards rebuilt and named Justinian Prima in 535, as it was the birthplace of the Eastern Justinian I and a seat of the province.

City of Skopje It was also a well-known trade centre during the long rule of the Ottomans (1392-1912), although it suffered another earthquake in 1515 and was burnt down because of plague by the Austrian general Piccolomini in 1689, who invaded Macedonia following the first revolt against the Ottoman Empire led by Karposh Vojvoda.

Today, Skopje is growing into a modern city with all the known vistas and views of its international architecture, but also with a well preserved and restored old and oriental quarter on the left bank of the River Vardar.
