The mysticism of Matka, the secret source of water behind which numerous
caves can be found. The Matka canyon is one of the most magnificent
regions in Macedonia. The sides of the canyon are vertical rocks, which
house ancient temples, medieval churches and monasteries.
The beautiful lake at Matka was formed by the construction of the hydroelectric dam
on the Treska River. It is about a 45 minutes drive from Skopje and then an easy
walk up to the lake and the restaurant. It is a popular place in the
summer for swimming, hiking and boating.
