Ottoman Macedonia

By the end of the 14th century Macedonia had been incorporated into the Ottoman Empire, one of the biggest in the history of mankind, with huge territory on three continents, today part of 38 modern states. The Ottomans were present in Macedonia for more than five centuries (till in 1912) thus changing and influencing the culture, religion and architecture of the entire Balkan peninsula.
Half a millennium of contact with Turkey had a profound impact on the mentality of people, language, food habits, and many aspects of daily living in Macedonia. But, the greatest legacy of the five-century long rule from the empire was the Ottoman Islamic architecture that is still evident in Macedonia; the bezistens and covered markets, the inns, hamams, mosques even today are telling the story of the richness and greatness of the Ottoman Empire.
