The mysticism of Matka, the secret source of water behind which numerous caves can be found. The Matka canyon is one of the most magnificent regions in Macedonia. The sides of the canyon are vertical rocks, which house ancient temples, medieval churches and monasteries.

Tour itinerary:

09:00 Departure from Skopje

09:30 Visit to the canyon Matka
From the parking lot we start our walking tour exploring the nature, beauties and sites of the canyon. We cross the bridge over the river and we set ourselves on the track. We walk to a location situated above the church of St. Nicolas Shishevski, where we have an excellent view of the canyon.

10:30 Arrival at the plateau of St. Nicolas Shishevski
30min time for break (sandwich and refreshments). During the break we will visit the monastery inside and get acquainted with the history of the monastery and how it was built, regarding that there is no accessible road to it.

11:00 We’ll set off from the monastery downhill to the lake taking a shortcut. The way down is quite abrupt

11:20 Boat trip to Vrelo cave
In the surroundings of the canyon of river Treska you can also find dozens of caves filled with numerous stalagmites, stalactites, stalagmites and dripstone pillars, and of course you’ll get acquainted with all the inhabitants of the cave. The Vrelo cave is one the deepest in Europe and the biggest in the canyon.
